Why Fleece Is a Common Source
Fleece fabric starts as a polyester knit. After knitting, it’s brushed on one or both sides to raise the fiber loops and create the characteristic soft, fluffy texture. This process — called “napping” or “raising” — dramatically increases the surface area of exposed fiber ends.

- Fibers pass to the wastewater system

Down or synthetic insulation jackets: Puffer-style insulation doesn’t have a fleece outer — the outer shell is typically a woven fabric, lower-shed than a brushed polyester surface. (Note: down is a higher-PFAS-risk category for the shell’s DWR treatment — look for PFAS-free certification.)
Merino wool midlayers: Merino sweaters and midlayers provide warmth without fleece’s shedding characteristics. High cost, high performance.
