Short version 100 words

Wove is an independent iOS app that helps people understand what their clothing is actually made of. Using a photo, URL, screenshot, or product description, Wove instantly scores any garment from A+ to F based on fiber composition, microplastic shedding risk, PFAS chemical concerns, and overall sustainability. Founded in Charlotte, NC by Emily Hemphill, Wove takes no advertising, no brand sponsorships, and no paid placements — every score is earned, never purchased. The app is free to download, with optional premium tiers, and is currently available on the Apple App Store. An Android version is in development. Learn more at woveapp.com.

Long version 300 words

Wove is an independent technology company building transparency tools for the fashion industry, starting with a clothing scanner app that reveals what your fabrics are really made of. The Wove app, available on the Apple App Store, lets users scan any clothing item — by photo, URL, screenshot, or product description — and instantly see a Wove Score from A+ to F. Each score reflects the garment's fiber composition, microplastic shedding risk, presence of PFAS "forever chemicals," and overall sustainability. When a product falls short, Wove surfaces healthier alternatives, so users can shop consciously without spending hours decoding labels. Wove was founded in Charlotte, NC by Emily Hemphill after a frustrating search for cotton trousers turned up nothing but polyester. What began as a personal quest became a mission: make it easy for anyone to know what's touching their skin. Unlike many sustainability tools, Wove is completely independent. The company takes no advertising revenue, no brand sponsorships, and no paid placements. No manufacturer can influence a score, and user data is never sold. The app is free to download, with optional premium tiers at $3.99/month or $25/year. An Android version is currently in development, with a waitlist open at woveapp.com.

Emily Hemphill

Founder, Wove · Charlotte, NC

Emily Hemphill is the founder of Wove, the independent iOS app bringing transparency to fashion. The idea came from personal frustration: an afternoon spent searching for cotton trousers turned up nothing but polyester. The deeper she dug, the more she learned about how synthetic fabrics, microplastics, and "forever chemicals" can quietly affect long-term health — and the less acceptable the industry's opacity became. Based in Charlotte, NC, Emily also shares her approach to non-toxic living and natural-fiber fashion with a growing community on Instagram at @emmhemphill.

On the why

"I spent hours one afternoon searching for cotton trousers and couldn't find a single pair that wasn't mostly polyester. That was my breaking point. The more I learned about how synthetic fabrics and microplastics can affect our hormones and long-term health, the more I realized this wasn't a niche concern — it was something everyone deserved to know about the clothes they put on their bodies every day."

On the problem

"Fashion has gotten very good at marketing sustainability and very bad at practicing transparency. Labels are confusing, claims are vague, and most 'eco' tools are funded by the same brands they claim to evaluate. Wove takes no ads and no brand deals — because the moment a score can be bought, it stops being useful to the person wearing the clothes."

On the vision

"Wove isn't just an app — it's a shift in mindset. We're building toward a future where knowing what's in your clothing is as normal as reading a nutrition label. The things closest to our bodies shouldn't be the things we know the least about."
