Most conversations about microplastic shedding focus on fiber type — polyester vs. cotton, synthetic vs. natural. But construction matters too. Two polyester garments can shed very differently depending on how they’re built. Understanding this gives you more to work with when shopping.
What Fabric Construction Means
“Fabric construction” refers to how fibers are assembled into a textile — how the individual threads or yarns are interlocked, looped, or bonded to form the final cloth. The two main categories are woven and knit, with a third category for non-woven materials (like felt or some technical fabrics).
Woven fabrics are made by interlacing horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) threads at right angles. The interlocked structure is inherently stable — threads hold each other in place. Wovens include denim, canvas, taffeta, broadcloth, and ripstop.
Knit fabrics are made from loops of yarn interlocked in rows and columns. The loop structure gives knits their stretch but also creates more mobile fiber ends. Jersey, fleece, and most t-shirt and activewear fabrics are knits.
Non-woven fabrics are bonded by heat, pressure, or chemical treatment rather than interlacing. Felt, some interfacings, and some technical membranes fall in this category.
Why Some Fabrics Shed More Than Others
The microfiber shedding difference between constructions comes down to fiber mobility and exposed surface area:
A tight woven structure locks fibers in place. Fiber ends are constrained by the crossing threads around them. It takes significant mechanical force (or years of wear) to dislodge them.
A loose knit structure leaves loops partially exposed. Each loop has two fiber ends that are held by adjacent loops but have some freedom of movement. Washing agitation can shake these loose relatively easily.
Fleece is essentially a knit with the loops cut open and then brushed to create a fluffy surface. The brushed surface has enormous numbers of fiber ends exposed with minimal constraint — which is why fleece is one of the highest-shedding fabric types.
Pile fabrics (velvet, velour, terry cloth) have fibers deliberately inserted at right angles to the base fabric to create texture. Like fleece, these have many exposed fiber ends.
Knit, Weave, and Blend Differences
Knit fabrics vs. woven fabrics (same fiber):
A polyester ripstop (woven) will shed fewer fibers per wash than a polyester jersey (knit) with the same fiber content. The structure matters independently of the fiber.
Blends and their behavior:
Blended fabrics shed proportionally to their synthetic content, but construction still modulates this. A 70% polyester / 30% cotton knit jersey sheds plastic fibers from its polyester component — the cotton content doesn’t cancel the polyester shedding.
Yarn type within a fabric:
Fabrics made from long filament yarns (continuous strands) are more stable than those made from spun yarns (shorter fibers twisted together). Spun yarn fabrics have more exposed fiber ends even before washing begins.
Thread count and weight:
Heavier-weight fabrics with higher thread counts tend to be more stable. A 300-thread-count fabric has more interlocking structure per square inch than a 100-thread-count fabric.
What to Look for in Lower-Shed Fabrics
When evaluating whether a fabric’s construction is lower-shed, look for:
Tight, smooth surface: If you can rub your hand across the fabric and feel resistance without snagging, it’s likely a tighter construction.
No visible pile or texture: Smooth-surfaced fabrics have less exposed fiber area than textured or pile fabrics.
“Woven” in the product description: Woven nylon, woven polyester, and woven shells are lower-shed than knit equivalents.
Heavier fabric weight: For the same fiber type, heavier weight often correlates with denser construction and lower shedding.

Does knit vs. woven matter as much as fiber type?
Fiber type (natural vs. synthetic) is the more important distinction for plastic shedding. Within synthetic fabrics, construction is the secondary variable. Both matter.
Is athletic wear always high-shed because it’s knit?
Athletic wear knits vary in density. A tight compression-style knit sheds less than a loose jersey knit. High-quality athletic fabrics often use denser constructions that perform better on both stretch and stability.
Does pilling affect shedding?
Pilling is related to shedding but separate. Pills form when surface fibers bunch together rather than releasing. Fabrics prone to pilling have already loosened fibers — pilling can then release those fibers during subsequent washes.
Can I tell construction by touching a fabric?
Often yes. Woven fabrics feel more rigid and structured; knits have give in multiple directions. Fleece and pile fabrics are obvious by touch. Smooth vs. textured surfaces are also perceptible by hand.
