Semi-Synthetic Fibers
These are made from natural raw materials (usually wood pulp) that have been chemically processed into fibers. The quality of the processing matters a lot.
- Rayon / Viscose. Made from wood cellulose. Soft and drapey, but the production process is often chemically intensive.
- Modal. A type of rayon, typically from beech wood. Softer and more durable than standard viscose.
- Lyocell (often sold as Tencel). Made from sustainably sourced wood pulp in a closed-loop process that recycles 99% of the solvent used. Generally the most eco-friendly option in this category.
- Cupro. Made from cotton linter (the fuzz left over after ginning). Silky feel, often used as a silk alternative.
- Bamboo. Almost always sold as "bamboo viscose" or "bamboo rayon," which means it's been heavily processed. Truly mechanically processed bamboo (sometimes called "bamboo linen") is rare.
Synthetic Fibers
These are petroleum-derived — essentially plastic spun into thread. They're cheap, durable, stretchy, and quick-drying. They also shed microplastics with every wash and don't biodegrade.
- Polyester. The most common synthetic in apparel. Wrinkle-resistant, sweat-trapping, and a major source of microfiber pollution.
- Nylon (Polyamide). Strong, smooth, often used in activewear, swimwear, and hosiery.
- Acrylic. Wool-like in feel. Common in sweaters and knitwear. Tends to pill heavily.
- Spandex / Elastane / Lycra. The stretchy fiber. Usually appears at 1–10% to add give to other fabrics. Different names, same fiber.
- Acetate. A plant-based fiber that behaves more like a synthetic. Often used as a lining.
Reading Fiber Blends and Percentages
Blends are where most people get tripped up. A few quick rules of thumb:
- The first fiber listed dominates the garment's behavior. A "55% linen, 45% cotton" shirt will feel more like linen than a "45% linen, 55% cotton" one.
- A small amount of synthetic changes everything. Even 3–5% spandex makes a fabric stretchy. Even 10% polyester makes a fabric shed microplastics.
- "Performance" blends are usually mostly synthetic. If it says "moisture-wicking" or "quick-dry," expect the composition to skew heavily toward polyester or nylon.

What country of origin can't tell you: the actual fiber source. A "Made in Italy" tag means the garment was assembled in Italy, not that the cotton was grown there.
Certifications and Trust Marks Worth Looking For

- Bluesign. Focuses on responsible chemical use throughout textile manufacturing.
- GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and RCS (Recycled Claim Standard). Verify recycled content claims.
- Cradle to Cradle Certified. Evaluates products on material health, recyclability, renewable energy, water, and social fairness.
