What's changed in the last seventy or so years is what happens between the plant and the shirt. Conventional cotton is now one of the most chemically intensive crops in modern agriculture — heavily treated with synthetic pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, and defoliants — and the fabric it becomes typically goes through dozens of additional chemical processing steps before it reaches a hanger. Organic cotton is the alternative version of that supply chain. Same plant. Very different process.

What is organic cotton?

Organic cotton is cotton grown according to certified organic farming standards — meaning without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds. The fiber must come from non-GMO plants, and the fields must be free of prohibited synthetic chemicals for at least three years before the cotton can be certified.

But there's a layer that surprises people: the term "organic" technically refers only to the growing of the cotton, not what happens after. A cotton plant grown organically can still be processed using chlorine bleach, formaldehyde, azo dyes, and other harmful chemicals in the spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing stages. This is why certifications like GOTS exist — to extend organic standards across the entire supply chain rather than just the field.

On the pesticide stat. Organic Authority and other widely-cited sources put cotton at 24% of the world's insecticide market and 11% of global pesticide sales, making it one of the most pesticide-intensive crops on the planet. More recent figures from the Environmental Justice Foundation revise that down to 16% of insecticides and 6% of pesticides. Either way, the headline holds: cotton uses a disproportionate share of global agricultural chemicals relative to the land it occupies.

On water. The water comparison is contested. Older sources cite the 20,000-liters-per-kilogram figure. Recent data revises that downward to roughly 2,068 liters per kilogram on average, with wide regional variation. Organic cotton typically uses meaningfully less water than conventional — TheRoundup's compiled industry data suggests organic cotton can use up to 91% less water — but the exact gap depends a lot on how and where the cotton is grown.

On processing. This is the most overlooked piece. A garment labeled "organic cotton" on its own says only that the fiber was grown organically. It doesn't say anything about how the fabric was bleached, dyed, or finished. For that, you need GOTS — which is what the next section is about.

Cotton labeling is one of the most marketed and least regulated parts of clothing. Anyone can put "organic cotton" on a hangtag. What separates a meaningful claim from a marketing claim is a third-party certification with an audit trail.

Benefits of organic cotton

The case for organic cotton works on three levels — environmental, personal, and social — and the relative weight depends on what you care most about.

Environmental benefits. No synthetic pesticide and fertilizer runoff into local water systems. Healthier soil that retains carbon and supports biodiversity. Less reliance on the petrochemical industry that produces most synthetic agricultural inputs. Lower water use in many cases. Better farm-level adaptability to changing climate conditions because of more resilient soil.

Personal exposure. A finished organic cotton garment — especially a GOTS-certified one — carries far lower residues of the chemicals that conventional cotton typically passes through: pesticide residue from the field, plus formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, heavy metals, and certain azo dyes from conventional processing. This matters most for items in extended skin contact: underwear, bras, base layers, sheets, towels, and anything for babies, whose skin is more permeable and whose bodies are still developing.

Social and farmer welfare. Conventional cotton production has well-documented links to acute pesticide poisoning among farmworkers, particularly in lower-income countries where protective equipment is less available and pesticide regulations are weaker. Organic farming dramatically reduces those exposures. GOTS specifically adds International Labour Organization-based social criteria — fair wages, freedom of association, no child or forced labor — that apply across the entire supply chain, not just the field.

For most of us, the biggest tangible difference at home is going to be the chemistry of the finished garment. Cotton that has been grown organically and processed under GOTS standards genuinely doesn't have the same chemical residue profile as a conventionally grown and conventionally processed cotton garment — particularly for items that touch your skin all day.

Where to start with organic cotton

The goal isn't to overhaul your closet overnight. The most useful approach is to prioritize the categories where organic cotton genuinely changes the chemistry of what's against your body, and let the rest catch up over time as items wear out.

Start at the base of the pyramid and work up as items wear out — the biggest chemistry gains come from the categories with the most skin contact.

The framework is simple: the longer something is against your skin, and the more permeable that skin is, the more the upgrade pays off. That order in practice:

  1. Underwear, bras, base layers, and baby/toddler clothes. This is where to start. These items sit against the most sensitive skin for the most hours per day, and get washed and re-worn most frequently — so any chemical residue from conventional processing has the most opportunity to migrate.   2. Bedding, pajamas, and loungewear. You spend roughly a third of your life against your sheets and in your pajamas. Switching these to GOTS-certified organic cotton is a high-leverage move.
  3. Casual wear — t-shirts, soft pants, knit dresses. Daily moderate skin contact. Lower urgency than the first two tiers, but a meaningful win as items wear out and get replaced.
  4. Outerwear and rarely-laundered items. Lowest priority. A wool blazer or a denim jacket isn't a typical PFAS or microplastic concern — and isn't where organic cotton has the strongest case either.

Where organic cotton has limits

Organic cotton solves real problems, but it isn't a silver bullet. A few honest caveats worth knowing:

"Organic cotton" alone doesn't guarantee chemical-free finishing. Without a GOTS or OEKO-TEX backing, the fiber may have been grown organically and then bleached, dyed, and finished using the same chemicals as conventional cotton. The certification is the part that matters.

Yields are lower. Organic cotton typically produces less fiber per acre than conventional cotton, which is part of why prices are higher and why farmer transition takes investment. This is a real economic challenge, not just a marketing line.

Not all organic cotton is created equal. Organic farming in a water-stressed region with poor labor protections is meaningfully different from organic farming on a regenerative farm in a temperate climate. Certifications help, but country and brand transparency still matter.

Price. Genuinely organic and GOTS-certified clothing typically costs 2–3× what conventional cotton equivalents do. That's a real barrier. The two ways to make it sustainable for most households: prioritize the highest-impact categories first (basics), and let everything else catch up over time as items wear out.
