Most garments are blends of two or more fibers. The question is whether that blend serves you — adding durability, stretch, or performance — or whether it’s primarily a cost-cutting measure that complicates the garment’s end-of-life. Here’s how to tell the difference.

What a Fabric Blend Is

A fabric blend combines two or more fiber types in a single fabric. The blending can happen at the fiber stage (fibers spun together into a single yarn), the yarn stage (different yarns plied together), or the fabric stage (different yarns woven or knit together in patterns).

Why Brands Use Blends

Performance engineering: Blends can hit performance targets that a single fiber can’t. A 90/10 merino/nylon blend is more durable than pure merino without sacrificing much of the softness. A 95/5 cotton/spandex is more comfortable in fitted garments than 100% cotton.

Cost management: Adding cheaper fibers to expensive ones reduces material cost. A 55% linen / 45% polyester blend is cheaper than 100% linen. This isn’t inherently dishonest, but it’s worth understanding when the blend serves you versus when it serves the brand’s margin.

Improved care: All-linen wrinkles aggressively; a cotton-linen blend is somewhat easier to care for. All-silk is fragile; a silk-cotton blend is more forgiving.

Recycled material inclusion: Brands increasingly use blended recycled polyester or recycled nylon alongside natural fibers. This addresses input-side concerns but creates recyclability trade-offs.

How to Evaluate a Blend

Step 1: Identify the dominant fiber. The highest-percentage fiber sets the primary character of the garment. A 70% merino / 30% polyester is a synthetic-blended merino — meaningfully different from a 30% merino / 70% polyester synthetic with some merino in it.

Step 2: Ask what each minor fiber adds. A few percent of spandex adds stretch. Ten percent of nylon adds durability. Thirty percent of polyester probably adds cost control, not performance.

Step 3: Consider end-of-life. Blends of natural and synthetic fibers typically can’t be mechanically recycled through current systems. If circularity matters to you, all-natural or all-synthetic is more recyclable than a mix.

Step 4: Check certification. A GOTS-certified cotton/spandex blend still meets GOTS standards. An uncertified “organic cotton / recycled polyester” blend may or may not.

FAQ

Is a recycled polyester + cotton blend “sustainable”?
Partially. The recycled polyester addresses input sourcing; the cotton can be organic. But the blend is harder to recycle at end-of-life than either fiber alone, and the polyester still sheds microplastics during washing. Sustainability is a spectrum — this is better than conventional polyester alone, but not fully circular.

Are blends always lower quality than single-fiber fabrics?
No. Some blends — merino/nylon, for example — outperform either fiber alone for specific uses. Quality depends on fiber grade, blend ratios, and construction, not on whether it’s a blend.

What percentage of synthetic fiber in a blend causes microplastic shedding?
Any synthetic content sheds its proportion of microplastics. A 10% polyester content sheds about 10% as much as a 100% polyester garment with the same construction and weight.

What’s the most “sustainable” blend?
Depends on what you prioritize. For low chemical concern and minimal microplastic shedding: GOTS-certified cotton/linen or merino/silk. For durability and performance: merino/nylon with bluesign® certification. For price-accessible certified option: GOTS organic cotton/spandex.
