What Makes a Basic “Safer”

The term “safer” in clothing refers to two things in this context:

Fewer chemical concerns: Clothing worn close to skin over long periods provides more opportunity for chemical exposure than outerwear. Basics made from certified natural fibers — organic cotton, linen, wool — or certified synthetics with PFAS-free claims minimize this.

Less microplastic shedding: Basics washed frequently shed more total microplastics over time than items washed less often. Natural fibers shed natural fibers, not plastic. Synthetics shed microplastics with every wash.

Neither of these concerns makes a given garment dangerous at normal exposure levels. But if you’re building a wardrobe with intention, basics are the highest-leverage place to start.

Fabrics to Prioritize

Organic cotton: GOTS-certified organic cotton is grown without most synthetic pesticides and processed without certain chemical treatments. It’s a strong default choice for t-shirts, underwear, and other basics. Look for GOTS or OEKO-TEX® certification rather than just the word “organic.”

GOTS-certified cotton: GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) covers both fiber content and processing — it’s more comprehensive than “organic cotton” alone, which only describes the farming stage.

Linen: Made from flax, linen is naturally moisture-wicking, breathable, and durable. It doesn’t require pesticide-heavy cultivation and doesn’t need chemical treatments for its performance properties. A strong option for warm-weather basics.

Merino wool: One of the highest-performing natural fibers for base layers. It regulates temperature, resists odor naturally (so you wash it less), and doesn’t shed microplastics. MULESING-FREE labeling is something to look for if animal welfare is a concern.

Bamboo viscose: Often marketed for softness and moisture-wicking. The fiber itself is benign, but the viscose processing uses significant chemical inputs — look for OEKO-TEX® certification on the finished garment to confirm the final product is clean.

Red Flags to Watch For

“Moisture-wicking” on a polyester t-shirt without certification: Moisture-wicking polyester isn’t inherently PFAS-treated, but it sheds microplastics. If you’re choosing between polyester and cotton for an everyday t-shirt, cotton will shed natural fibers rather than plastic.

“Stain-resistant” on underwear or base layers: This claim in direct skin-contact garments is worth investigating. Stain resistance treatments that include PFAS in a base layer worn all day are a higher concern than the same treatment on a jacket you wear occasionally.

“Wrinkle-free” or “no-iron” cotton dress shirts: This finish is typically achieved with formaldehyde-based resins — a separate but real concern for daily-wear items.

No certifications and no material disclosures: Low-cost fast-fashion basics often have no certification and use commodity cotton and synthetics with no chemical management. This doesn’t make them automatically harmful, but it does mean you have less information.

GOTS and OEKO-TEX® both have public certification databases you can search by brand or facility name. If a brand claims certification, you can verify it.
